National Championship Playoff Solution: College Football

Kill the Bill Tournament Series
As If we really need the government involved in anything more, a bill introduced by Rep. Joe Barton (R-Tex.), would bring the extended argument over the NCCA College Football Division 1-A National Championship to an end. Why in the world this government of ours feels it needs to get involved in every aspect of American life I will never know.
This bill and the endless hearings will be as much a waste of the people’s time and money as the hearings into Major League Baseball were. This is not the type of business the people need our representatives in government to be flouting their time and effort on. Certainly this is nothing more than an attempt at mass distraction to keep our eyes off the real issues of healthcare and Cap in Trade.
I must give the President a small amount of credit for at least following through on one of his campaign promises, not one we were interested in, and certainly one of misdirection, but a small amount of kudos are due, since he has proven he is not a 100% deceiver, only 99%. Interestingly, and this is an example of the two party system no longer working for the good of the people they represent, this bill was introduced by a Republican, and in true Bipartisan fashion endorsed by a Democrat. Do you smell a closed-door deal here? Did the president buy a Cap in Trade vote?
With all the this political crappolla going on I propose to settle the issue. Yes little old conservative, teabagging, loud mouth, gun toting, right wing extremist nut job, me, putting aside all my traitorous thoughts to assist the government and the people of this great nation with a simple solution for the “problem” at hand.
Below I have charted a 32 team playoff system that includes all but one bowl game, the Armed Forces Bowl, and should end all the whining. This proposal includes the top 32 ranked teams so there should be no room for complaining any team of merit or recognition being left out and includes all 37-bowl games excluding only the one stated above.
The Chart below employs only the rankings from Sagrin and assigns bowls in no particular order other than the traditional date order. The teams, rankings, bowls & dates applied were from this year. The arguing over that can be done later, and outside the chambers of government. Wins in this chart are mythical, with the winner of each game chosen in an every other one method, to demonstrate advancement only. The Championship Series format is similar to the NCCA basketball tourney, three rounds with a bye week in between round one & two, then round three, the semi-final games and the Championship game. The tourney play dates take into account traditional Holidays and extends the season approximately one week past this year's final game.
Given this year's game was a bit of a letdown since Texas appears it was only a one man show this format should provide everything a college football fan would want , and the networks should covet.

A Real National Champion
You may have noticed games are assigned initially via ranking or cede. With highest always matched with lowest. As shown above #1 plays #32, # 2 plays #31 and so on. The highest ceded winning team is always matched with the lowest ranking advancing team for the succeeding rounds.
Rankings for all teams should not commence until the fifth week of the season, which should increase the level of competition and excitement through out the year. All bowl & conference tie ins and agreements have to be scrapped, but certainly all conference champions would be included in the top 32 teams as well as the “have nots” that have been left out of the mix for many years. Bowl revenues should go through the roof and as in Basketball the final winner will have proven itself to be the best team in the country and should keep the government's great big bureacratic nose out of college football.

ready,
I can agree with your format, but I also think the regular season should be shortened if it is adopted. The student athletes need to go to class for finals also. The majority of them will never have an NFL career. It definitately isn't any business of the Federal Government.
You've obviously put a lot of effort in this schedule and it looks impressive, but I don't know enough about the schedule to have an opinion. I have an opinion about the Congress - stay out of sports~ all of them...

I’m torn here, I really hate and despise this current bunch in Washington these days and yes; I love Football; both college and pro. I’m a lifelong fan of the SEC having grown up in Mississippi so naturally I am very pleased with the outcome of the BCS series these last few years.
Here’s my dilemma; should Congress take on this problem; it could keep them occupied for up to a month. Now think about it. For one solid month they would not be enacting legislation designed to steal more of your money or further destroy the economy. Unless of course they decide to assign a progressive tax on the proposed playoff. The further a team goes in the playoffs the more its’ players, coaches, fans and the state in which the school is located would be taxed. It would be congress’s way of redistributing the talent; the money collected would go to the lesser schools so they could improve their facilities and attract more of the top players!
As far as creating a diversion for phase two of Karl Marx Jrs. Move America ahead towards socialism agenda; I don’t see where this bunch feels the need for a diversion. Look at the stink raised over health care and still they thumbed their noses at us and said “to hell with what you want, we’re doing this”!
In the final analysis it matters little or none what we the people want; whether it’s deciding a national champion or trying to protect the greatest health care system in the world; like all Oligarchies they will do as they damn well please and to hell with the people. After all elections have consequences and enough of our ill informed starry eyed dreamer fellow citizens fell for this Hope and Change BS so they feel; and rightfully so, WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET!
I know not a thing about football, other than that the government has absolutely no place in it! And I agree, they are just trying to distract us from what is going on behind the scenes!
Ready
This government will never be content with merely fixing potholes; they are the potholes in our life around which we must navigate in order to remain prosperous.
I agree with you that a national championship playoff is desperately needed. I would propose it be structured somewhat like the Basketball NCAA Championship. Here’s how it would work. Each team now plays a 12 game schedule which consists of 3 to 4 cup-cakes for tune up purposes and an open week. Scrap the cup cakes; make every team come out of the gate ready to play. Also scrap the open date. Take the 4 to 5 weeks and us it at the end of the season for the Championship Playoff.
Four Week Play off
I. The top 16 teams in the Nation following a 10 week, 10 game season begin the playoffs; Number 1 plays number 16; 2 plays 15 and so on.
ii. The playoffs would run four consecutive weeks; the first week 8 teams eliminated; the second 4 more the third week 2 more and finally the last two teams standing.
III. The season would start on Saturday September 4, 2010 for all teams. A 10 game season plus the 4 week playoff would run through December 4, the ending date. Thus the season with a playoff could be handled with an ending date before Christmas!
What about the teams other than the top 16
Follow the same format for the 17-32; 33-48 and so forth as far as you want to go. This actually would increase the various bowl’s potential to make money (which currently the biggest critic to changing the system) because you would actually be adding venues depending on how deep into the top 100 teams you went! Schools could make more money, more cities could profit from this system and think of all the extra CAPITAL AVAILABLE FOR OBAMA AND HIS DEMOCRATS TO CONFISCATE THROUGH ADDITIONAL TAXES!
Ready
I gotta agree with you; a holiday season without bowl games would be like a year without sunshine. So I defer to your plan. On another note as far as getting out of honey-do’s I developed a brilliant strategy years ago when I first got married. I demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt my total ineptitude in all handy man activities that now my wife leaves me alone and either does them herself or hires them out!
I would much rather see Ameicans pay more attention to the
arena of American politics than to some sport event that only results in pride in some team loaded with a bunch of
jocks. It does not matter who is Number One in any sports, but It really matters who the Number One is in charge of your country!
Politicians should worry more about the unread bills they force down our throats, than Football standings. I don't get taxed if Texas is number one or number 3 or number 999!! Maybe they just use this as a distraction, or could it be they are trying to impress the stupid voters?
WHO CARES!
As much as I would love to see a playoff system for College Football , our Government has far more on its plate to concern itself with then this.Ya know things like healthcare, unemployment and National Security ?
One of the great things about bowls is that a lot of teams get to end their season with a win, unlike the college basketball tournament where all but one go home losers. I think maintaining the bowls system while tweaking it to add in an eight-team playoff is a much better solution, check it out here: http://hubpages.com/_2sy5vk5vfn4nm/hub/The-Ideal-C

I would love to see this format, but I would even be happy with an 8 team playoff and a few extra bowl games. Kind of like what the NIT is in college hoops.
